How do parents communicate with their child while the program is technology-free?
While participants do not have access to internet-connected devices during the residential program, FFI staff remain accessible. Parents and guardians are provided with contact information and instructions before the program begins so they know how to reach FFI if necessary. They also receive daily updates on the team accompanied by photos.
Can my child bring their phone for travel? What happens to it during the program?
Participants who need a phone for travel may bring one with them. However, once the residential program begins, participants do not have access to internet-connected devices for the remainder of the program. Devices are locked in our safe.
What do programs cost?
If a participant applies directly to FFI (rather than through a third-party school or organization), every accepted student receives a full scholarship. FFI covers room and board, meals, activities, program fees, FFI gear, and transportation during the program. Families are responsible for getting their student to and from the designated drop-off and pick-up location.
How does FFI handle dietary restrictions and food allergies?
FFI serves plant-based meals throughout its programs. Before participation, families provide FFI with important information about their child, including dietary needs and allergies. We encourage families to communicate any dietary restrictions or serious food allergies with FFI before the program so our team can determine how they can be safely accommodated.
What happens if my child gets sick or injured?
Participant safety is a priority throughout the program, and FFI staff remain on call during residential experiences. If a participant becomes sick or injured, staff will assess the situation, communicate with the participant's parent or guardian as appropriate, and seek medical attention when necessary. Families should make sure FFI has complete and accurate health and emergency information before the program.
What happens if my child wants to leave the program early?
FFI programs are intentionally challenging, and there may be moments when a participant feels tired, uncomfortable, homesick, or outside their comfort zone. Staff and leaders will work with the participant to understand what they are experiencing and help them work through challenges when appropriate. If a participant ultimately needs to leave the program, FFI will work directly with their parent or guardian to determine next steps.
Who supervises participants overnight?
FFI's residential programs are supported by FFI staff and trained leaders, including FFI alumni who serve as program counselors and mentors. Staff remain on call throughout the program and are responsible for participant safety and program logistics.
How are medications handled?
Parents or guardians provide FFI with information about medications and other relevant needs before the program. Specific medication instructions and procedures should be communicated with FFI staff before participation. Generally speaking, participants should be able to monitor their medications independently. If your child requires medication or has particular medical needs, please discuss these with FFI staff before the program begins.
What if my child has never stayed away from home before?
That's okay. For some participants, an FFI program is their first extended experience away from home. Our programs are designed to challenge young people to become more independent while also being part of a supportive team. FFI staff and alumni leaders work closely with participants throughout the experience, and staff monitor both individual and team progress throughout the program.
